Simply put, mainstream medicine fails to eradicate our\u00a0everyday pains, illnesses and diseases. It fails because it is\u00a0passive and reactionary and thus unable to prevent you from\u00a0experiencing chronic health conditions like heart disease,\u00a0diabetes, hyper-tension, obesity, stress, anxiety, depression,\u00a0headache, back pain, tendonitis and hundreds of others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your personal health issues are \u201cmanaged\u201d by prescription\u00a0medication, various therapies and surgery.\u00a0Natural treatment can also fall into this category, if\u00a0the approach is relief of symptoms and not correction of\u00a0underlying (root) causes.\u00a0While treating symptoms of pain and inflammation\u00a0are necessary for immediate relief, it must be done as an\u00a0intermediary step while implementing a truly corrective\u00a0approach.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"nerve-pain\"<\/a>After all, any model based simply on symptomatic relief\u00a0(whether modern or traditional) can never hope to resolve\u00a0your daily pain problems.\u00a0Your best course of action is to carefully analyze the\u00a0source of your pain and use natural pain relief methods to\u00a0stem the discomfort.\u00a0Pain can originate from many sources: You\u2019re on the run\u00a0and seized by a spasm in your neck. The stress of the day\u00a0triggers a migraine. Or you overexert yourself, and now your\u00a0<\/span>back is out.<\/span><\/p>\n

You are a busy person and can\u2019t let these ailments derail\u00a0your day or your week, even if they are intensely painful. So\u00a0you head to the nearest drugstore and look for quick relief in\u00a0a bottle, a patch or a cream.\u00a0When you get there, you are overwhelmed with choices.\u00a0You look at packaging; recall past experiences and mull over\u00a0product advertising claims before reaching for the most\u00a0popular brand and hoping for the best.\u00a0Several hours later, you\u2019re still in pain and you take another\u00a0dose of the over-the-counter (OTC) remedy. Later, you\u00a0experience stomach discomfort and gastrointestinal irritation\u00a0from those pills. And your body still hurts.<\/span><\/p>\n

COMPLICATED ANSWERS<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019re like millions of other Americans, you have at\u00a0least one (and probably several) chronic health concerns. For\u00a0many, it\u2019s a pain-related ailment. Back pain is reported as the\u00a0number one reason people visit their primary care physician.\u00a0Headaches and joint pain rank up there, too. I am often asked\u00a0which OTC remedy is best for pain. The answer, however, is\u00a0not a simple one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like many of you, I am both amazed and dumbfounded\u00a0by the volume of pain products on the market. A short walk\u00a0down any store\u2019s supplement aisle is soon overwhelming if one\u00a0is hoping to find relief for symptoms. How is it that there can\u00a0be so many products for pain? Some block the pain receptors,\u00a0while others reduce inflammation. Also offered: Topical pain\u00a0patches, heat therapy, cold therapy and on and on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Which treatment is the right one to use for your pain or\u00a0discomfort?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The most important aspect to consider is that not every solution is appropriate for every pain-related problem, despite advertisements and widespread beliefs. For instance, if you are struggling with neck pain, should you go for ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory) or naproxen (an analgesic)? While many individuals think these two options are equivalent, most people find that one works better for them than the other, suggesting that not all remedies are effective for every situation. This serves as a clear indication that the effectiveness of a product can vary based on the individual. Another example of this is the administration of cannabis for Parkinson’s disease<\/a>, which has been explored as a powerful treatment option for some patients.<\/p>\n

So while Motrin\u00ae and Aleve\u00ae both help reduce pain\u00a0sensations for a period of time, they do so from different\u00a0mechanisms.\u00a0If your pain is the result of inflammation, then Motrin\u00ae\u00a0matched with a cool-therapy patch, cream or compress is a\u00a0relatively better choice. However, if your pain results from\u00a0trigger points, Aleve\u00ae, coupled with a heat-therapy cream,\u00a0patch or pad is a relatively better option. I say relatively\u00a0because neither OTC pain reliever is natural, and either can\u00a0harm the body when used for an extended period of time.<\/span><\/p>\n

DIFFERENT CAUSES<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

When pain symptoms are felt in the neck, the cause\u00a0<\/span>of the pain is not the same as it is for back pain. As a basic\u00a0<\/span>rule, however, inflammation should be reduced while spasms\u00a0<\/span>and trigger points should be released. Applying heat to pain\u00a0<\/span>originating from inflammation makes the symptoms worse\u00a0<\/span>and applying cold to already constricted muscles makes those\u00a0<\/span>symptoms worse. Spending a moment to discern the pain\u00a0<\/span>syndrome (collection of symptoms) before making your pain-relieving<\/span>
\n selection goes a long way towards quickening the\u00a0<\/span>results you desire \u2013 without aggravating symptoms or making\u00a0<\/span>the ailment more painful.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea here is that one size does not fit all, thus no one\u00a0<\/span>pain product is best for all types of pain. Don\u2019t mindlessly grab\u00a0<\/span>a product off the shelf when you\u2019re experiencing symptoms\u00a0<\/span>just because that product worked for a friend, you saw a\u00a0<\/span>convincing ad or it\u2019s on sale. Think the situation through first\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 and then decide which (if any) product is a good choice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is your pain throbbing\u2026 the site of the pain red and\u00a0<\/span>swollen? Do you have restricted range of motion? These\u00a0<\/span>questions are relevant to understanding the source of the pain,\u00a0<\/span>which itself is a symptom of a larger imbalance. Until the\u00a0<\/span>cause of the pain is addressed, the pain will inevitably return\u00a0<\/span>and you\u2019ll need more meds to ease the discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another problem with OTC pain relief is that these\u00a0<\/span>products are only effective for the limited time the remedy\u00a0<\/span>is active in your body. This is usually between two and four\u00a0<\/span>hours. After that, their effects wear off and you need to take\u00a0<\/span>more. The serious problem here is that if the product is not\u00a0<\/span>the most appropriate to your pain syndrome, you can actually\u00a0<\/span>be damaging your body while not even truly helping the\u00a0<\/span>issue. More importantly, if the product works on symptomatic\u00a0<\/span>relief (which most do) and not on changing the problem\u00a0<\/span>itself (which most don\u2019t), then you risk becoming chronically\u00a0<\/span>dependent on the product. This can lead to serious problems\u00a0<\/span>for your stomach lining, digestive tract, liver and kidneys. All\u00a0<\/span>the while your original pain problem continues.<\/span><\/p>\n

REALITIES<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

While I advocate natural health products, I am realistic in\u00a0<\/span>my expectations of them. Most natural products for pain are\u00a0<\/span>best used as preventive measures or at the very first sign of\u00a0<\/span>pain symptoms. Natural pain products like arnica, turmeric,\u00a0<\/span>capsicum, angelica root, feverfew, camphor and others are\u00a0<\/span>safe and gentle on the system. However, they generally are\u00a0<\/span>not strong enough to be much help during severe pain that\u00a0<\/span>is in full swing. Also, like OTC pain meds, these are each\u00a0<\/span>specific for different kinds of pain-related symptoms. Arnica is\u00a0<\/span>appropriate for topical inflammation and turmeric for systemic\u00a0<\/span>inflammation; capsicum for muscle spasm and angelica root to\u00a0<\/span>quicken blood stagnation and so on. Again, even with natural\u00a0<\/span>products, it is advised to first examine your pain type, then\u00a0<\/span>consider the related symptoms that are also occurring and\u00a0<\/span>look for a solution to address the overall pain syndrome you\u00a0<\/span>are experiencing in that moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

ENVIRONMENTAL ROOTS<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

For your body to experience pain of any kind, there must\u00a0<\/span>be an environment within it that allows the symptoms to\u00a0<\/span>take hold and cause you discomfort. This means that if your\u00a0<\/span>muscles are supple and blood is moving through them in the\u00a0<\/span>appropriate way, you should not experience muscle tightness,\u00a0<\/span>strain or trigger points. However, because of poor diet, lack\u00a0<\/span>of stretching and exercise and sitting for long periods of time,\u00a0<\/span>the resting length of muscles shortens and less blood moves\u00a0<\/span>through them more slowly, allowing toxins to build in the\u00a0<\/span>tissue. Those events cause pain and trigger points to manifest.\u00a0<\/span>Instead of unconsciously reaching for an anti-inflammatory\u00a0<\/span>pain reliever (for example), you should be doing several things\u00a0<\/span>that can solve your problem:<\/span><\/p>\n

Correcting the habit that creates the problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Changing the environment in the muscle housing the\u00a0<\/span>problem.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To remedy pain, you must think about your pain and try\u00a0<\/span>to discern what kind it is. And what the trigger (cause) is. And then pick the right mix of natural solutions from herbs to bodywork, from meditation to acupuncture. This can take years of research and decades of trial and error on your own.<\/span><\/p>\n
